Petite biographie
Né le 22 avril 1937, dans la petite ville de Neptune (New Jersey) Jack Nicholson (de son vrai prénom John) voit le jour. A 17 ans, il s'installe à Los Angeles où il exerce divers petits métiers, dont celui d'assistant animateur à la MGM.
Il commence alors à suivre ses premiers cours de comédie en compagnie de Martin Landau, et, dans la foulée, apparaît dans diverses séries télévisées. Roger Corman, alors grand manitou du cinéma de série B, le prend sous contrat. Pendant dix ans, Nicholson fera les beaux jours de la société de Corman, la Hammer, qui produit des merveilles telles que La petite boutique des horreurs, The Terror ou L'affaire Al Capone. Parallèlement, il écrit plusieurs scénarios (dont celui de The Trip, qui deviendra le premier film psychédélique, et Head, qui marque le début de sa collaboration avec Bob Rafelson).
Il jongle alors entre le cinéma «trash» et l'avant-garde, collaborant au montage financier de diverses productions indépendantes. Les cinéphiles français le découvrent dans L'ouragan de la vengeance, un western de Monte Hellman, puis il triomphe dans Easy rider, réalisé par le comédien Dennis Hopper, qui marque les débuts d'un nouveau genre cinématographique, le road-movie. A partir de là, les rôles vont rapidement s'enchaîner pour Nicholson, qui tourne pour l'occasion avec les plus grands réalisateurs du moment : Vincente Minnelli (Melinda), Mike Nichols (Ce plaisir qu'on dit charnel), Roman Polanski (Chinatown), Michelangelo Antonioni (Profession reporter), Arthur Penn (Missouri Breaks), Elia Kazan (Le dernier nabab) ou encore Milos Forman et Vol au-dessus d'un nid de coucou pour lequel il reçoit son premier Oscar. Le deuxième sera pour Tendres passions, de James L Brooks, en 1983.
Par ailleurs couvert de prix internationaux (La dernière corvée, Chinatown, L'honneur des Prizzi, Batman), le
rôle le plus marquant de Nicholson
reste celui, monstrueux, de Jack Torrance dans Shining,
réalisé par Stanley Kubrick. Rajoutant une corde à son
arc, Jack Nicholson a aussi réalisé plusieurs films, dont The Two
Jakes qui est la suite de Chinatown.
